Laser welding – a welding method with precision
Laser welding can be used for various types of joints and joint geometries. By varying optics and laser power, everything from thin foils to thick castings can be welded. Thanks to the laser’s high energy density, neither high melting temperature nor high thermal conductivity of the material creates any problems. Many materials that normally cannot be welded with conventional methods can be laser-welded. This is due to the minimal weld melt and good control of cooling rate. In many cases, no filler material is required.
In laser welding both the heat-affected zone around the weld and the total heating of the workpiece are significantly less compared with conventional arc welding. This results in lower deformations and in many cases better strength properties. Thanks to its stability and low profile costly post-processing can be minimised or eliminated.
